Chapter 13

P almer dropped me at the apothecary, where I was determined to get in a full day’s work. I unlocked the door, prepared to open the shop myself for the first time in what seemed like forever.

After putting my coat and bag away in the office, I lit Trina’s candle. “Sorry I haven’t been able to chat with you for a while. Life’s been busy, mostly in a good way.” I sat on the stool behind the counter and stared into the candle. “I’ve been spending more time with Palmer, and I really like him. He invited all of us to his house for Christmas, and it was amazing. He made so much food for us, and we all had presents under the tree too. I know I’m young, but I think he may be my person. He definitely cares about me even though I’m not a normal person and, honestly, I think he’s falling in love with me.”

The candle seemed to burn brighter for a moment, but I’m sure that was just my imagination.

“The shop is doing great. I think the best thing I ever did was hire Mackenzie. She’s so much better at keeping the shop immaculately clean, and she’s really taken to the customers. They like her as well. I don’t know what I’ll do if she ever decides to leave.”

I stood up and started walking around the shop, looking for anything to clean, tidy, or arrange. Soon, I’d have to put away the New Year’s display and create a Valentine’s Day one. Lots of floral-scented lotions, some oils, maybe crystals designed to increase your romantic life.

“The family is fine, but the sorority, not so much. We’re having issues getting along, and it’s because I’m so young and have a familiar. They’re not happy that I inherited Jameson when some of them haven’t had a familiar for a long time.”

I paused as a thought occurred to me. “But Eunice never seemed upset I had Jameson and she didn’t. Why not?” I wished I could ask her. I picked up Trina’s photo. “I miss you. I feel like I didn’t have enough time as your apprentice before I joined the sorority, and I didn’t get all the guidance I need.”

I set the photo down. Maybe that was what I needed? A new mentor. I’d ask Grandma and Hope what they thought about the idea.

I pulled the hawthorn berry tea from the shelf and started brewing it. The fruity, floral flavor would bring thoughts of spring to the gray, cloudy day.

I poured myself a mug when it finished brewing and got to work in the prep room by putting the candle wax back on the hot plate. “Don’t be angry with me, wax. I promise you’ll be candles by the end of the day.”

Yes, I did talk to my ingredients sometimes. Intention is critical in potion making, and I always thought it couldn’t hurt to share your intentions with your materials. I looked at my shelves of ingredients and realized I had plenty of herbs to make a batch of protective ward candles.
